C O M M U N I T Y
HOW CORPORATIONS AFFECT COMMUNITIES
Increasing corporatization of society has had dramatic impacts upon our communities. Communities are not only where we live, they are shared spaces, shared interests, shared institutions, and shared hopes. Many people associate "community" with neighborhood, though recently technology has expanded the boundaries of communities to include Internet-based bulletin boards, chatrooms, and listserves. But really, a community can be anywhere there are common interests or common turf. Due to a wide range of impacts from corporatization, many of our communities have grown substantially smaller. As living has grown more complex and time more scarce, more of our communities have become highly personalized, composed of a largely hand-picked circle of associates we can turn to for mutual support. Increasingly, we choose our own communities, our set of responsibilities and obligations. For many people, the feeling of community has disappeared altogether. The sense of community has largely left many neighborhoods, leaving many to look for it elsewhere. Before looking at how to find and create community, let's look at what how and why the traditional community --the neighborhood--has changed.
